Imagine, despite the warnings, most tourists come with sunburned skin… Red like crabs or peeling like a boiled potato.
Being one of the top tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, our studio has the opportunity to tattoo clients from all over the world, with different lifestyles and skin types. Many of these visitors, both national and international, decide to get a tattoo as a memento of their vacation. They choose to get tattooed during the last few days of their stay in the area. Imagine, despite the prior warnings, when it’s time to get tattooed, most of them come with sunburned skin, red like crabs or peeling like a boiled potato. In the best case, with a slight redness.
It’s important to consider that many of these individuals have fair skin that barely sees the sun for most of the year. Suddenly, they expose themselves to two weeks of intense sun in the Malaga beach area… Their skin becomes a party! Many of them don’t mind or prefer to ignore the warnings, and that’s respectable. After all, they want a souvenir, something to capture their vacation like a photograph. And tattoos are there for that, with all their consequences!
I don’t want to give the impression that the Costa del Sol is the Magaluf of tattoos…
It’s important to clarify that not all tourists and travelers fall into this category. Additionally, I want to differentiate between European tourists and local European residents. I dare say that the tattoo culture in their own countries makes the local residents more responsible when it comes to caring for and respecting the guidelines provided by tattoo studios. Tattoo artists adore fair and white skin because it allows us to make the most of colors and the intensity of black ink. In the case of local or national clientele, it’s different as their skin is familiar with the sun. That’s where doubts arise. When we lose respect for the sun because we know it so well.
Although we don’t recommend summer for large tattoo pieces, it depends on the type of lifestyle you enjoy. It’s not the same if you’re a beach-loving athlete who basks in the sun from early morning or if you’re a creature of the night who jumps from shadow to shadow, avoiding sunlight. Why don’t we recommend it? Is there a problem if I get a tattoo in summer? No, nothing bad will happen to you. But you should consider that, depending on the high temperatures and humidity, the healing process can be more uncomfortable during summer. Additionally, the aftercare may prevent you from enjoying certain summer activities that can compromise your tattoo.
I still remember that client whom I “prohibited” from playing beach volleyball the day after getting tattooed. He came back two days later with a ruined tattoo and an infection… He didn’t listen to me much. He “protected” it with plastic film, and the beach sand got inside…
In any case, we strive to do our best under the adverse circumstances presented by our clients’ skin during summer. Getting a simple tattoo or a small symbol has a better chance of surviving on skin in poor condition compared to a complex tattoo with gradients and color. At Rolling Tattoo, we don’t complicate things, and we don’t want to complicate things for the client either. A poor result due to skin in poor condition will only anger or disappoint even the most stubborn client (despite our warnings), and the studio won’t be satisfied or well-represented by that work. If a client comes in with a complex idea, we prefer to postpone the work if possible. Otherwise, we won’t do it.
The erosive and oxidizing power of the sun can be observed in all kinds of materials… anyone who has left their favorite black clothing in the sun knows what we mean. Solar radiation is detrimental to a tattoo. For a recent tattoo, it’s a problem because it promotes inflammation and inevitably affects its final appearance. The sun creates and prolongs discoloration, lightening the skin in healing areas. For an existing tattoo, it poses a silent problem. It’s only noticeable after carelessness and the passage of time. Sun rays oxidize the pigments in tattoo ink. The tones of your tattoo will lighten, colors will lose their brightness and intensity, blacks will turn greenish or bluish, and definition will start to blur.

Al ser una de las zonas turísticas por excelencia del Mediterráneo, en el Estudio tenemos la oportunidad de tatuar a clientes de todas partes del mundo, con diferentes estilos de vida y tipos de piel. Muchos de esos visitantes, nacionales e internacionales, deciden llevarse un recuerdo de sus vacaciones en la piel. Deciden tatuarse durante los últimos días de estancia en la zona. Imaginad, pese a las advertencias previas, en el momento de tatuar, la mayoría vienen con su piel “hecha a la plancha”… Rojos como cangrejos o despellejándose como una patata cocida. En el mejor de los casos, con un ligero enrojecimiento.
Hay que tener en cuenta que muchas de esas personas tienen una piel caucásica a la que apenas acaricia el sol durante la mayor parte del año. Y de ahí, han pasado a darse una paliza en la playa de quince días bajo el sol malagueño… ¡Su piel es una fiesta! A muchos de ellos no les importa o prefieren ignorar las advertencias, es respetable. Al fin y al cabo, quieren un souvenir. Algo que capture sus vacaciones como una fotografía. Y para eso también están los tatus ¡Con todas sus consecuencias!
No quiero dar la sensación de que la Costa del Sol sea el Magaluf de los tattoos…
Hay que dejar claro que no es el caso de todos los turistas. Y además quiero diferenciar al turista europeo del vecino local europeo. De este último me atrevería a decir que la cultura del tatuaje en sus países les hace más responsables a la hora de cuidar y respetar las indicaciones que damos desde los Estudios de Tatuaje. Los tatuadores adoramos las pieles caucásicas y “blanquitas” que nos permiten sacar todo el provecho al uso del color y la intensidad del negro. En el caso de la clientela local o nacional es diferente, sus pieles conocen el sol. Es en este caso donde se imponen las dudas. Cuando le hemos perdido el respeto al sol por conocerlo tan de cerca.
Aunque no recomendamos el verano para tatuarse, lo cierto es que depende del tipo de estilo de vida que disfrutes. No es lo mismo si eres un Deportista playero tostado al sol desde primera hora de la mañana que si eres una Criatura de la Noche que salta de sombra en sombra evitando los rayos solares… ¿Por qué no lo recomendamos? ¿Pasa algo si me tatúo en verano? No, no te va a suceder nada malo. Pero deberás tener en cuenta que, dependiendo de las altas temperaturas y la humedad, durante el verano el proceso de la curación puede ser más molesta. Por otra parte, la cura te va a impedir disfrutar de algunas actividades veraniegas que comprometerán tu tatuaje.
Aún recuerdo aquel cliente al que le “prohibí” ir a jugar al Volley-Playa al día siguiente de tatuarse. Vino a los dos días con su tatuaje reventado con una infección… Lo “protegió” con film de plástico y la arena de la playa se coló dentro…
En cualquier caso, debemos procurar hacer un buen trabajo bajo las circunstancias adversas que nos proponen las pieles de nuestros clientes en verano: Hacer un sencillo tatuaje o un pequeño símbolo, tendrá más posibilidades de sobrevivir sobre una piel en malas condiciones que un tatuaje complejo con degradados y color. En Rolling Tattoo no nos complicamos y tampoco queremos complicar al cliente. Un mal resultado debido a una piel en malas condiciones enfadará o decepcionará al cliente más cabezota (Por mucho que le hayamos avisado.) y tampoco el Estudio quedará contento ni representado con ese trabajo. Si este viene con una idea compleja, preferimos posponer el trabajo si es posible. En caso contrario, no lo haremos.
El poder de erosión y oxidación del sol puede observarse en todo tipo de materiales… quien haya dejado su ropa negra favorita al sol sabrá a lo que nos referimos. La radiación solar es pésima para un tatuaje. Para el tatuaje reciente es un problema porque favorece la inflamación y afecta irremediablemente a su aspecto final. El sol crea y prolonga manchas, aclarando la piel, en las zonas en proceso de cicatrización. Para el tattoo que ya estaba en la piel supone un problema silencioso. Sólo se aprecia tras la despreocupación y el paso del tiempo. Los rayos de sol oxidan los pigmentos que se encuentran en la tinta del tatuaje. Los tonos de tu tatuaje se aclararán, los colores perderán su brillo e intensidad, los negros se tornarán verdosos o azulados y la definición comenzará a perderse tomando un aspecto borroso.
Nuestra recomendación, en cualquier caso, es que seas precavido durante todo el año y especialmente en verano.
