Blackwork

The Blackwork Style (Pieces in black) are characterized by the use of black ink. The solidity and longevity of the black strokes in most skin tones make this style the perfect choice for a tattoo. It’s not only ideal to transfer linear designs, mandalas and illustrations; but it also gathers the ancestral and tribal tradition of the tattoo art.

In the Blackwork Style, the goal isn’t to reach the realism; it’s a technique in itself. The use of the traditional shadows becomes anecdotal. The volume is achieved by the use of other techniques such as dotwork, weaved lines from the traditional engraving style or the black masses of the most contemporary illustration or the comics, to transport the tattoo to a more iconic and visual level.

A good specialist on Blackwork should master the illustration and the ability of designing and interpret the high contract of her/his designs to achieve solid pieces. Apart from the
technique’s control, the visual and narrative culture are fundamental.
